According to America’s Federal Trade Commission (FTC)’s Green Guides (link opens in new tab), a company or person can only claim an item is compostable if they can present evidence that “all materials in the product or package will break down into — or become part of — usable compost safely and in about the same time as the materials with which it is composted” at home. Companies or individuals must let consumers know if the item can only be composted at certain facilities if those facilities are uncommon in most municipalities.
